When I moved to Bengaluru in the mid 90s, Tom’s Restaurant was a landmark in town. Spun out of another iconic establishment, Fatima Bakery in the early 80s, the restaurant was a hit for its meaty Mangalorean fare that was served with some ‘cold ones’ back in the day. Since then, both the bakery and Tom’s had to close to make way for the Metro. Tom’s emerged in a new location on Brigade Road a few years ago but perhaps sans the allure of its past. My last visit to the restaurant was in the last century, so I really didn’t know what to expect when I dropped in for an impromptu lunch as part of my ‘Bengaluru 90s restaurants feature.’ However, suffice to say, I was pleasantly surprised by most of the dishes I tasted. The place may not be as much of a landmark as before, but the flavours that I tasted in their pepper fry, chilli fry and vindaloo were certainly the sort that left an impression. If you like your meaty, Mangalorean Catholic fare, Tom’s is certainly worth a visit or more.
