Written in 1995, Robert W. Smith’ s “The Tempest” is a staple of the repertoire for developing bands. The piece was conceived as a concert/festival work to teach several important elements of ensemble playing, including phrasing, articulation, key changes, and musical texture. However, “The Tempest” is no sunny walk in the park: its intense percussion hits, mysterious woodwind ostinatos, and powerful brass lines conjure all the fury of a hurricane. Buckle in as The United States Air Force Concert Band unleashes “The Tempest”!
